What Is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease and one of the most common forms of arthritis. It affects more than 20 million Americans and is the number one reason for joint replacement surgery. Joints contain cartilage that cushion the bones. When that cartilage breaks down, the ends of the bones rub together, causing pain and loss of movement. OA also reduces the ability of synovial fluid, the natural lubricant in joints, to function as a shock absorber. What Causes Osteoarthritis?Many factors can cause OA, including age, obesity, joint injuries, poor posture and genetic factors. OA affects women at a higher incidence than men. It can affect the hands and shoulders as well as weight-bearing joints in the knees, hips, feet and the back.
